On October 17, 1998, in conjunction with the Old Time Wooden Nickel Company’s 50th anniversary, the Wooden Nickel Historical Museum held its grand opening to further public awareness about the long history of, and San Antonio’s contribution to Wooden Nickels. Wooden Nickels have been in San Antonio since 1948.
The Wooden Nickel Museum has on display over 1 million wooden nickels dating back 60 years. You’ll see Sambos wooden nickels, Mardi Gras, Geocaching, Scouts, Politicians, International, Farmers Markets, Musicians, Flat Wooden Nickels and many, many more. We also have the one and only Wooden Nickel Vault, which holds several hundred thousand wooden nickels.
In June 2002, the Wooden Nickel Historical Museum unveiled the World’s Largest Wooden Nickel during the 1st Annual Wooden Nickel Festival. Every year, the Museum redesigns the World’s Largest Wooden Nickel and dedicates it to a different non-profit organization, which promotes “American Values” & leadership.
